Analyst Criticizes Long Island Golf Fans After U.S. Open Disruptions

Golf Channel’s Eamon Lynch expressed disapproval of Long Island, New York golf fans following disruptions at the U.S. Open held at Shinnecock Hills. Lynch declared that major golf tournaments should avoid Long Island due to the poor behavior of attendees.

During the tournament, fans heckled U.S. Open contender Wyndham Clark, calling out phrases like “Don’t choke Wyndham” and “Get in the bunker” during his final round. Lynch stated that such behavior tarnishes the sport.

Lynch remarked, “Long Island golf fans are a stain on the game of golf.”

The commentator highlighted previous incidents at Long Island venues such as Bethpage Black, where Ryder Cup players were subjected to taunts. Noteworthy was Rory McIlroy’s response to hecklers while competing, and an incident where a fan threw a beer at his wife.

Lynch contrasted Long Island with other venues like Winged Foot and Baltusrol, which have not experienced similar issues. He asserted a need for golf to adopt practices seen at Augusta National Golf Club during The Masters to improve conduct.

Lynch suggested, “Maybe golf in its entirety needs to take the Augusta National model. No phones, no tolerance, no second chance.”

Despite Clark’s turbulent relationship with fans, Lynch believes that maintaining proper decorum at major championships remains crucial.
