Former Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan is endorsing Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan in Alaska’s Senate race. This decision comes amid voter confusion due to another candidate, teacher Dan J. Sullivan, who shares the same name. Legal challenges and accusations have arisen, claiming that Dan J. Sullivan’s candidacy aims to confuse voters.

Dan A. Sullivan, the former mayor, expressed his support on social media, stating, As the OG Dan Sullivan, I urge Alaskans to vote for Sen. Dan S. Sullivan. He’s been great for Alaska. This endorsement adds a layer to the race, where Sen. Dan S. Sullivan and his allies accuse teacher Dan J. Sullivan of attempting to siphon votes by running as a GOP candidate. Dan J. Sullivan denies these claims, arguing he is a genuine moderate Republican challenger.

The Republican party has sought to legally remove Dan J. Sullivan from the ballot, citing his connection with a Democratic-aligned consultant as evidence of a liberal plot. Dan J. Sullivan counters this by asserting his legitimate concerns about Sen. Dan S. Sullivan’s representation of the state.

Alaska’s unique electoral system may further confuse voters. The state uses a nonpartisan primary where the top four vote-getters advance to the general election, irrespective of party affiliation.
