Andy Burnham, who is set to become Britain’s next prime minister, has unveiled his plan for governance. He promises to raise living standards and decentralize power from London to other cities in the UK. A key part of his proposal involves establishing a new operation in Manchester, dubbed ‘No. 10 North,’ which aims to provide more funding and authority to local leaders.

Burnham has served as the mayor of Greater Manchester for nine years. He was elected to Parliament recently, positioning him as a leading candidate to succeed Keir Starmer, who has announced his resignation as the Labour Party leader and prime minister. With no other candidates in the race, Burnham’s plans are gaining attention as he could assume office in three weeks.

In a speech delivered in Manchester, Burnham outlined his vision for a decade-long mission. This includes re-industrializing the economy, launching extensive housing projects, reforming the welfare system, and increasing state oversight of major utilities. He stated, ‘I am going to give Britain the circuit-breaker it needs,’ highlighting the centralized nature of the current political system.

Burnham asserts that his approach would lead to the ‘biggest rebalancing of power’ the nation has experienced. His plan involves public interventions to set higher goals and moving away from the market-dependent ‘trickle-down’ economic theory.
