Fernando Mendoza, the top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, balanced his commitment to the Las Vegas Raiders with attending his graduation ceremony. Despite his dedication to the Raiders, Mendoza participated in Cal’s MBA graduation ceremony.
Mendoza had previously missed his undergraduate ceremony while focusing on NFL obligations and his master’s program at Indiana University. Dean Jenny Chatman of Cal’s Haas School of Business allowed Mendoza to walk the stage during the MBA ceremony, which led to applause from the audience.
“He actually had a really good excuse for missing commencement. He used his Haas skills and coursework to negotiate an excellent job and an excellent comp package,” Chatman shared during the ceremony, emphasizing Mendoza’s success in both academics and athletics.
Mendoza completed his undergraduate degree while succeeding academically at Indiana University and as an athlete. He led the Hoosiers to an undefeated season, culminating in a national championship victory in his hometown of Miami.
Following his draft selection, Mendoza focuses on his role with the Raiders amidst speculation that veteran Kirk Cousins may start initially. Head coach Klint Kubiak indicated that Mendoza would develop skills before potentially taking over as starting quarterback.
Additionally, Mendoza chose to prioritize his Raiders commitments over attending a White House ceremony with his Hoosiers teammates. President Donald Trump noted Mendoza’s decision and expressed hope for the quarterback’s success in Las Vegas.
