Annual Sugar Grove Corn Boil: A Celebration of Community

1 week ago 0

Celebrating Tradition in Fox Valley

Fox Valley communities cherish traditional celebrations that unite locals. For Sugar Grove resident Samantha Calderon, the annual Corn Boil is the highlight. The event has been a favorite since they moved from Warrenville. Samantha and her husband Joel attended the fest at Volunteer Park, Sugar Grove, enjoying the sense of community it fosters.

A Festive Gathering

The Sugar Grove Corn Boil spans nearly six decades, orchestrated by a dedicated citizens’ volunteer group. The four-day fest, starting Thursday and wrapping up Sunday, features carnival rides, food vendors, children’s activities, and live performances. Expected attendance ranges from 30,000 to 35,000 guests at Volunteer Park, 31 S. Main St.

Music and Community Spirit

Music is a major draw of the festival. Friday’s lineup included performances by three bands: The Dog & Pony Show, a Led Zeppelin tribute band, and the Karen Hart Band paying homage to The Pretenders and Heart. For Joel Calderone, community festivals offer a touch of normalcy after the disruptions of COVID-19.

A Feast for All

Food remains a central attraction. Calderone favored pulled pork from Annabell’s Bar-B-Q, which provided popular dishes like pork on a stick. Head cook Karl Grant from Shorewood, in charge of grilling, noted the business’s 20-year presence at the event.

“We get people that follow us around, and we see new faces but it’s also great to see the same people over and over,” said Grant.

Volunteers Behind the Scenes

Dave Burroughs, an Elburn resident, has overseen corn boiling for over 25 years. This year, 8,000 ears of corn were purchased, anticipating good weather and a strong turnout.

Welcome to New Attendees

First-time festival-goers Ryan and Jessica Chrisman from Aurora appreciated the nostalgic vibe and community connection the Corn Boil offered. Events like the Sugar Grove Corn Boil foster a sense of belonging based on each community’s unique culture.
