The Texas Longhorns, led by Arch Manning at quarterback, are ranked first and looking strong in the race to become College Football Playoff (CFP) contenders. Despite the team’s dominance, Manning’s draft prospects have not matched expectations, seemingly falling out of the first round for the 2027 NFL Draft.
Individually, Manning’s performance has been less than stellar. Against tough opponents like Ohio State and Tennessee, Manning struggled as a passer, recording interceptions in both games and throwing for only 195 and 201 yards respectively. His output contrasts with the expectations of him as a potential top pick in the 2027 Draft.
Due to his unimpressive individual achievements this season, Manning’s position on the draft board has declined significantly, according to CBS NFL Draft analyst Ryan Wilson. Discussing Manning’s draft status, Wilson explained why Manning is no longer a first-round pick.
“I’ve talked to folk in the league that are… I don’t want to say frustrated. But Arch Manning has not lived up to expectations,” Wilson said. “He faces immense pressure, more than his uncles ever did due to today’s technological world. Ultimately, he has not performed to the level of a first-round pick.”
Wilson compared Manning to other recent talents with exceptional arm strength who failed to excel as NFL starters. “Manning is an incredible athlete with a powerful arm. Yet, he hasn’t shown he’s a top 15 pick,” Wilson noted. “If roles need filling from positions 16-32, I won’t choose a developmental quarterback until round two. This doesn’t mean the season can’t end differently for Manning, he might get red hot. But as of now, five other quarterbacks would be better choices.”
Despite this, Manning’s team has enjoyed success. He has multiple opportunities to showcase his abilities in crucial games if Texas maintains their performance. A key opportunity for Manning to improve his draft status is the anticipated Week 6 matchup against the Oklahoma Sooners. The Red River Rivalry kicks off at 3:30 pm EST on Saturday, Oct. 10, broadcast on ABC.
