Artemis Astronauts Share Their Experience of Returning to Earth

Jeremy Hansen and his fellow astronauts described their return to Earth as a thrilling experience comparable to the best roller coaster ride. During a town hall event, Hansen explained the dramatic sights and sensations they experienced during the landing, including the vivid colors produced by plasma outside the spacecraft windows.

“It’s like all the sights, all the feels,” Hansen told students, highlighting the ‘fireball’ seen during re-entry. He added that he felt like he was being thrashed around and pushed into the seat by G-forces.

Christina Koch recounted her elation during splashdown, emphasizing her shared joy with Hansen marked by a celebratory fist bump. The four astronauts completed their groundbreaking mission around the moon, landing in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego.

Bonding Moments After Landing

Reid Wiseman shared a light-hearted moment post-splashdown when Koch offered peanut M&Ms from her spacesuit pocket as they waited for rescue teams. The crew felt content sharing snacks after their return from the moon.

Adjusting to Gravity

Students asked the astronauts about their favorite aspects of gravity. While Hansen missed nothing, he encouraged everyone to experience microgravity, despite the challenges it presents for everyday tasks. Koch noted that adjusting to gravity again was mildly awkward, as their bodies relearned balance after nine days in space.

Challenges and Decisions in Space

The crew faced a significant decision during the mission when an alarm indicated a possible fuel leak. Wiseman explained how they relied on training to decide not to execute emergency procedures that could have shut down the entire fuel system.

Importance of Teamwork

Teamwork remains crucial in successful missions, as underscored by Koch. She praised the ground teams who supported the mission, emphasizing how the breathtaking views from space humbled and bonded the astronauts.

Inspiring Future Space Explorers

Five-year-old Jack, an enthusiastic aspiring astronaut, attended the town hall. Koch presented him with a spacesuit, matching the ones worn by Artemis II crew members.

Insights from “Apollo 13” Director

Director Ron Howard asked how Artemis II compared to International Space Station missions. Koch noted the unique teamwork and problem-solving involved with Artemis. Hansen shared how the iconic “Apollo 13” film inspired him and reinforced the importance of teamwork and persistence through challenges.
