Arizona State University (ASU) is conducting an investigation into a demanding workout that left hockey player Matthew Mayich incapacitated. Family attorney Rob Carey appeared on ‘Fox & Friends First’ to provide insights and called for accountability from ASU athletic officials.

Players Demand Action

Seven Sun Devils hockey team members requested that ASU’s president place head coach Greg Powers and his staff on administrative leave. Their demand follows an incident where a teammate ended up on life support and in a coma during the August workout.

The players expressed concern about retaliation and disputed the university’s initial findings. They argued that Mayich received inadequate hydration and medical attention.

Details of the Grueling Workout

The players described the workout, led by a former U.S. Army Green Beret, as grueling. They stated that a water break occurred 40 minutes into the 75-minute session, contrary to the university’s report of a 20-minute interval. Only a few players managed to hydrate during the brief break.

During the workout, Mayich showed distress, demonstrated by disorientation during a bear crawl drill and difficulty in a buddy carry exercise.

Aftermath and Concerns

Mayich was reportedly left in direct sunlight after collapsing, challenging ASU’s report of him sitting up. Players claimed insufficient cooling methods were provided, given the high August temperatures in Arizona.

The players stated Mayich avoided heat by staying indoors due to oppressive weather. Traditionally, outdoor workouts lasted around 15 minutes before moving indoors.

Coach Powers’ Response

Coach Powers refrained from commenting recently, citing difficult times for the program. Players felt he minimized Mayich’s condition initially and linked it to a minor heat stroke, while suggesting the workout improved chances for reaching the Frozen Four in upcoming competitions.
