Atlanta Falcons’ Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. Faces Rib Injury Uncertainty

1 hour ago 0

The quarterback situation in Atlanta has been a focal point in the NFL. After offseason injuries and a temporary period with Cooper Rush as quarterback, Atlanta seemed to stabilize when Michael Penix Jr. returned to the starting lineup.

In a hard-fought game against the Baltimore Ravens, Penix suffered a rib injury from a sack. Though he attempted a brief return before the end of regulation, he could not continue in overtime. This led to Tua Tagovailoa stepping in, who unfortunately threw a game-ending interception. Currently, Penix’s status for the important Week 6 game against the Chicago Bears remains uncertain.

Michael Penix Jr. was pictured looking to pass against the Ravens during the second quarter at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on October 11, 2026. After an MRI earlier this week, Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski mentioned that the quarterback is on track to start Sunday’s game, provided there are no setbacks. Penix practiced on Wednesday but as a limited participant.

Stefanski refrained from sharing detailed information about Penix’s rib injury but assured reporters that the quarterback is “feeling better.” ESPN’s Adam Schefter indicated that the rib injury did not seem to be a long-term concern at the moment.

Penix’s recovery progress at practice this week will depend on his comfort level, according to Stefanski. “I want to see how he’s feeling,” Stefanski said. “With any injury like this, you want to check their movements and feelings — it could change over time.”

ESPN noted that Penix took all first-team reps at practice. “I felt good today at practice,” Penix told reporters regarding his ribs. “I need to stay vigilant with my rehab and make sure I’m doing everything right.”

Penix, who warmed up before a preseason NFL game against the Tennessee Titans, expressed confidence about playing this week. “I feel ready to go this week, so that’s the plan,” he added.

Penix’s injury history, notably his ACL surgery last November, is well-known. His recovery from surgery sidelined him for the Falcons’ initial two games this season.

Meanwhile, Bears star Caleb Williams’ status is also uncertain for Sunday’s game in Atlanta. He missed two games due to a hamstring injury, but Bears coach Ben Johnson announced Williams as a full participant on the latest injury report.
