Authorities Lift Shelter-in-Place Order in South Austin After Suspect Capture

1 month ago 0

Authorities have ended a shelter-in-place order for parts of south Austin, Texas, following the capture of two suspects possibly connected to a series of random shootings from late Saturday into Sunday. The Austin police updated the public on X, announcing, “The shelter in place for the south Austin area has been lifted, and two suspects are in custody.” However, a third suspect remains at large in the Manor area.

Details on the Incident

During a previous press briefing, Mayor Kirk Watson reported multiple shootings “throughout the area,” including incidents at two fire stations. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis indicated the shootings appeared random, with investigators yet to determine a motive.

At a final update around 7 p.m. local time, Watson expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts in the investigation before passing the floor to Davis. She reported both suspects in custody, noting one had a warrant for stealing a gun from the same store where his accomplice also stole a firearm. A stolen vehicle was reported before the gun theft. Police received 20 service calls related to the suspects, who targeted apartment buildings and fire stations, damaging a fire truck. They stole four vehicles during the spree. The public received thanks for adhering to alert notices, and officials requested more information about Sunday’s events.

Suspects and Vehicles

The identities of the two apprehended suspects remain undisclosed as police continue searching for a third suspect. Previously, authorities described seeking two Hispanic males in their late teens: one with medium wavy hair, the other with longer hair. It’s unclear which suspects are in custody.

Authorities shared information on three vehicles potentially linked to the shootings: a black Honda Accord, a gold Honda, and a white Nissan Altima. Mayor Watson mentioned suspect behavior of switching vehicles during the incidents.

Information on the Victims

Four people sustained gunshot wounds; one individual’s injuries are life-threatening, while the other three have non-life-threatening wounds. No further details on the victims are available, and whether any victims were fire station employees remains uncertain.

Affected Neighborhoods

The shelter-in-place order initially included a vast section of south Austin, from Skyline Park to Dick Nicholas District Park. Although the order has lifted for south Austin, residents in the Manor area should remain cautious as the search continues for the remaining suspect.

Resident Advisory

Davis urged residents to contact 911 immediately if they notice suspicious activities, advising against approaching any suspected vehicles. Additionally, securing personal vehicles is recommended. “Do not leave your keys or key fob in the vehicle,” Davis warned, emphasizing the theft of several vehicles during the incidents.

The investigation remains active, with further updates anticipated as the situation progresses.
