Backup Power Solutions for Increasingly Frequent Outages

Backup power options are essential as extreme weather events become more frequent, leading to longer power outages. Various solutions are available for ensuring that medical devices, phones, and other critical appliances remain operational.

Choosing the Right Backup System

Noah Kittner, an associate professor at the University of North Carolina, advises considering different backup power elements depending on conditions like heat waves and hurricanes. Experts offer guidance on selecting the suitable backup method for maintaining home operations when power is lost.

Portable Battery Banks

Portable battery banks are ideal when you only need to charge small items temporarily. Compact power banks can recharge a phone multiple times and cost under $100. Larger models, priced a few hundred dollars, offer traditional sockets for additional devices. They are best for phones, computers, flashlights, and small lights but not for larger appliances like dishwashers or air conditioners.

Traditional Portable Generators

Kaylin Johnson’s home survived the Eaton Fire in Altadena, California, thanks to a portable generator. These generators, powered by diesel, propane, or gasoline, are about the size of a microwave and often mounted on wheels. They produce emissions, so they must run outdoors. Depending on wattage, portable generators can power refrigerators, freezers, and window air conditioners, but not an entire house. Their runtime varies, and costs range from several hundred to over $1,000.

“The fuel tank capacity of standard designs may not be adequate for multiday outages,” says Mark Dyson of energy nonprofit RMI.

Whole-House Systems

Whole-house systems might be necessary in areas with frequent or prolonged outages, particularly for those relying on medical devices. These systems integrate with the home’s electrical setup and connect to natural gas or propane. Upon detecting an outage, they switch the home to generator power. Costs for these systems range from $5,000 to over $20,000.

Solar-powered and battery-integrated home systems represent another option, typically involving higher expenses but offering long-term advantages.

Solar Power and Portable Stations

Portable power stations using solar panels or wall outlets are gaining popularity. Smaller units are available for a few hundred dollars, while larger ones can cost $3,500 or more, powering medium-sized devices. Companies like Jackery, EcoFlow, and Anker produce these power stations.

“Our solutions now rival traditional gas generators,” claims Rachel Stotts from Jackery.

Installing a large solar battery system costs at least $20,000. However, the system’s benefits during outages and year-round make it worthwhile. Electric vehicles with appropriate features can power homes by using stored energy from their batteries.
