Baptist Pastors Oppose Bill on Autonomous Vehicles in D.C.

Religious groups are expressing concern about artificial intelligence, and Baptist pastors in particular are speaking out against a proposed bill in Washington D.C. This bill would allow autonomous vehicles, or driverless cars, to operate commercially within the District.

The pastors argue that such technology goes against human values and is not in line with their religious beliefs. The Rev. A. Michael Charles Durant is among those opposing the bill. He shared his views at Tenth Street Baptist Church, stating that Jesus would not support such technology. Durant emphasized that Jesus preferred walking or riding animals, suggesting that autonomous vehicles are inherently opposed to people.

The D.C. Council is currently deliberating on the bill, which has garnered attention from various stakeholders. If passed, it could lead to the legalization of commercial usage of driverless cars, similar to existing operations in places like San Francisco where companies such as Waymo are active.
