1 hour ago 0

This evening, the community of Bend is grappling with the aftermath of a horrific shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School. The somber mood was evident as residents gathered at Drake Park for a vigil. Claire Elmer, a reporter for KTVZ who is from Bend, expressed the emotional weight felt by locals. ‘This has been a very emotionally heavy day for our community,’ she remarked.

Parents reunited with their children at a unification center after the tragic events of the day. Elmer emphasized the unexpectedness of such violence in a familiar setting. A 16-year-old gunman, who has been identified as a Bend resident, was involved in the shooting that resulted in five deaths, including three children, a teacher, and the suspect.

Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler, speaking at the vigil, called for community support. ‘There are simply no words for the loss that we have suffered today,’ she said. Kebler urged residents to lean on one another during this difficult time.

The investigation into the tragedy is ongoing. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz detailed how the gunman entered Silver Rail Elementary by shooting through locked doors. A heroic bystander intervened and was able to stop further loss of life by confronting the shooter.

Authorities have asked the community for patience as they continue to investigate. Law enforcement officers will remain present at the school for several days as they conduct a thorough investigation.

Public officials, including Oregon Governor Tina Kotek, praised the quick response and bravery of the school staff, first responders, and the community member who intervened. ‘Your actions carry a heavy emotional burden,’ she acknowledged.

In the wake of the shooting, the Bend-La Pine Schools district announced the cancellation of classes and activities. The district is offering crisis counseling at the city’s library to help those affected cope with the tragedy.

The Bend community, renowned for its strong bonds, holds firm in its commitment to supporting one another. Superintendent Steve Cook of Bend-La Pine Schools highlighted this collective resolve. ‘Our immediate priorities are caring for our students and staff and assisting law enforcement and emergency responders,’ he stated.
