Bob Dylan Reflects on Life in His 80s

1 week ago 0

Bob Dylan, who celebrated his 85th birthday this spring, shares his thoughts on aging in a feature for The New York Times. He speaks of the freedom he feels from the passage of time, saying, “You outlive the clocks that have been chasing you.” For Dylan, this brings a sense of liberation from the illusion of control.

He describes aging poetically: “You don’t chase the parade anymore. You’re an old king from some vanished country. You’re harder to program. You’re not rushing to become anything and you’re not haunted by things that you did.” He believes reaching your 80s brings a new perspective on what truly matters, acknowledging that much “didn’t matter in the way you thought it would.”

While getting older can be freeing, Dylan observes challenges too. He notes that your spirit may remain fiery, but the physical ability to act may diminish. The lack of surprises feels less like a luxury than one might expect. He comments on the realization of understanding something too late to change past events, which adds complexity to aging.

Dylan offers a thought-provoking idea about time, stating, “When you’re young you think that time moves forward. At 80 you know that it doesn’t, it stands still. We’re the ones that move.” This reflection on time suggests a profound shift in perspective with age.
