1 day ago 0

A shooting incident occurred on Monday at a hotel in Montreal, resulting in the deaths of a police officer and a suspect, according to police reports. An officer was fatally shot before law enforcement returned fire, killing the shooter. Details surrounding the death of a civilian at the scene remain unclear.

Police Chief Fady Dagher shared that a second officer was seriously injured but stable following the incident in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood. This marked the first officer fatality in the Montreal police force in 24 years. Chief Dagher described the day as a “nightmare,” expressing deep sadness over the events.

The shooting began after a report at 11:35 a.m. of an individual holding a gun out of a Hilton hotel window. Police were immediately targeted upon arrival. Despite video evidence showing the suspect outside the hotel, the motive remains undetermined.

The slain officer was identified as Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouan, aged 34, who had served with the police force since 2021. Social media footage captured gunfire exchanges between officers and a suspect in olive attire.

Jacob Coutu, a nearby construction worker, recounted hearing multiple gunshots and observing police responding in large numbers. He estimated hearing 30 to 40 shots in total.

Authorities issued an alert urging locals to take shelter due to the armed suspect’s presence, which briefly closed the Décarie expressway and disrupted subway lines.

Quebec Domestic Security Minister Ian Lafrenière, while withholding specific details pending an independent investigation, confirmed that multiple agencies found no ties to terrorism in the shooting.

Lafrenière advised the public against sharing videos of the shooting, citing respect for the victims. British Columbia police were warned about potential threats to police officers following the incident, issued by a Royal Canadian Mounted Police intelligence unit.
