David Steiner, the Postmaster General, spoke at an event in Washington on July 23, 2025, to mark the 250th anniversary of the postal service. As the midterm elections approach, the Trump administration seeks to modify voting by mail rules, despite ongoing court decisions. Two federal courts have ruled that President Trump’s executive order on mail-ballot changes cannot proceed during litigation.
Now, the administration asks the Supreme Court to override these rulings, potentially altering mail-in voting rules shortly before Election Day. The Postal Service, led by Steiner, plays a key role, but he has declined to clarify his part in this contentious issue. This causes some to demand his removal from office.
Steiner has let the Postal Service become an agency in a legally challenged effort to change mail-in voting rules. Rather than defending the service’s independence, he avoids explaining compliance with court orders or assuring voters of impartial ballot delivery. Congress’s oversight questions remain unanswered.
The independence of the Postal Service is crucial to prevent presidential influence over mail delivery and ballot handling. Without reassurance from Steiner, confidence in lawful mail delivery diminishes. Allowing the Postal Service to be involved in potentially unlawful election changes compromises its integrity.
As litigation with the potential to alter voting methods continues, the postmaster general’s lack of commitment to court compliance undermines trust. His inability to participate in oversight could lead to changed election rules days prior. Calls for his resignation or removal highlight these concerns.
The Postal Service’s longstanding independence should prevent political tactics from dictating mail and ballot handling. Steiner’s actions suggest a setback of this principle. If he resists congressional accountability and court obedience, he should step down.
All voters deserve trustworthy delivery of their ballots without political sway. Steiner’s failure to safeguard this trust leads to demands for his resignation. Americans, including overseas military personnel, seniors, rural residents, and working parents, depend on reliable mail voting. Concerns may arise if election rules shift suddenly.
Steiner had months to demonstrate commitment to Postal Service independence and secure ballot delivery. Yet, his actions have not convinced the public. He should resign or be removed. If he resists, the Board of Governors should take action.
