Calls Grow for Ireland’s Soccer Team to Boycott Matches Against Israel

Protests and Boycott Demands

Ireland’s national soccer team is under increasing pressure to boycott its scheduled UEFA Nations League matches against Israel. The ‘Stop the Game’ protests are urging players and officials to withdraw from the fixtures. Ireland, which has a history of criticizing Israel’s actions in Gaza, recognized the state of Palestine in 2024.

The matches are set for September 27 in Debrecen, Hungary, and October 4 in Bačka Topola, Serbia. The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) will not facilitate tickets for Irish fans due to security concerns, though Israeli supporters can attend the September game.

Pressure Builds on Team and Coach

As the matches approach, pressure is mounting from athletes, former internationals, and pro-Palestinian protesters. ‘Stop the Game’ demonstrators rallied outside the team’s Dublin hotel. More than 160 athletes signed a letter urging the team not to play against Israel, citing concerns over alleged genocide in Gaza.

Irish coach Heimir Hallgrimsson has defended the decision to play, stating they are playing against genocide. Israel refutes allegations of genocide, calling its military efforts a defense against Hamas.

Responses from Israel and FAI

The Israeli Football Association (FA) criticized Hallgrimsson’s remarks, highlighting Israel’s contributions to global advancements. The Israel FA expressed frustration, considering filing a complaint with UEFA regarding Hallgrimsson’s comments.

FAI’s Chief Executive David Courell acknowledged the strong sentiment against playing the games but emphasized institutional change rather than boycotts. He underlined the distinction between playing against and with Israel in the context of the matches.

Debate Over Boycott and Broader Implications

Critics question why Israel faces such protests while Ireland’s teams compete against countries with questionable human rights records. Former Irish justice minister Alan Shatter cited Ireland’s sporting ties with Afghanistan and Qatar, noting a lack of similar outcry.

Political relations between Ireland and Israel have deteriorated amid the Gaza conflict and Ireland’s intervention in legal matters against Israel. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar accused Ireland of using rhetoric that delegitimizes Israel.
