Canada Makes History with Win Over South Africa, Advances in FIFA World Cup

Canada has achieved a historic milestone in the FIFA World Cup after securing a thrilling 1-0 victory against South Africa in the Round of 32. This victory marks Canada’s first advancement to the next round in the country’s history.

Stephen Eustaquio emerged as the hero of the Knockout Phase game by scoring the decisive goal during stoppage time, which sent Canada to the Round of 16.

Expressing his emotions after the victory, Eustaquio said, “Everything I do is for my family, my parents, for my girlfriend, for my daughter, for my brother, for my friends back home. For all of them.” His determination and passion for the match were evident in his words.

The team soldiered on to secure this win, aiming to make all Canadians proud. Eustaquio emphasized their belief and determination, stating, “We worked a lot to get this victory. We really wanted to give this win to all the Canadians and we kept pushing.” He shared these thoughts with Fox Sports in a post-match interview.

Reflecting on his goal, Eustaquio described it as amazing, revealing he “put a little bit of power on it” and experienced great joy when it found the back of the net. Although filled with emotion after the game-winning goal, he maintained calmness following the match.

“I feel very happy, but at the same time I’m very calm. I think we performed well,” Eustaquio explained. He acknowledged South Africa’s challenging play but credited Canada’s success to their strong performance on set pieces and transitions.

Speaking on motivation, he encourages his teammates, “When we shoot, we have to give everything we have, like our life depends on it.” Eustaquio believes this mindset played a significant role in securing the win.

Despite making history, Eustaquio stressed the need for the team to remain calm as they prepare for a formidable opponent in the Round of 16. They aim to prove themselves as a challenging team to face, hoping either Morocco or the Netherlands will view them as their toughest opponent.

Morocco and the Netherlands are scheduled to compete for advancement to the Round of 16 on Monday at 9 p.m. ET, with Morocco currently favored to move forward.
