Capturing the Drama at Pamplona’s Famous Bull Run

Pamplona, Spain (AP) — Miguel Osés, a resident of Pamplona in northern Spain, has collaborated with The Associated Press for two years. Here are his insights on this remarkable photograph.

Reasons for Choosing This Photo

This photograph was captured during the Running of the Bulls, known as el encierro, at the San Fermín festival in Pamplona. The image was shot at the renowned Mercaderes Curve, where it transitions into Estafeta Street.

Every day, a small group of photographers selects their positions by drawing cards from a deck. Osés finds this curve one of the most intriguing and perilous spots along the route due to its sharp bend, combined with the high speed of the bulls.

Technique Behind the Photograph

The photo was taken from the top of the wooden barricades securing the route, approximately 2.5 meters (8 feet) high. This vantage point provides a comprehensive view of the street and the curve.

The run begins at 8 a.m., winding through narrow, tall streets. The fast-paced and chaotic nature of the event required the use of a rapid shutter speed (1/1250) and a high ISO (2000). Out of the three cameras set up in various remote locations, Osés was holding the one used for this shot. He observed the bulls approaching tightly and swiftly, anticipating their potential collision with the barricade. This moment ended up pushing the runners aside. Osés took numerous frames, but this particular image was chosen by his editor for the AP.

The Impact of the Photograph

This image vividly illustrates the inherent danger of the famous run. People often overlook the fact that the event involves six fighting bulls, each weighing over 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds), stampeding through city streets teeming with people. This photo conveys the bulls’ formidable power as they race against the runners. The striking contrast between the animals’ colors and the gray pavement enhances the image’s impact. The compact, fast-moving pack ultimately swept the runners seen in the frame.
