Chance Meeting Transforms Life of Former College Athlete

Earlier this year, Jasper Steinmetz walked a path in Austin, Texas, and encountered a man with a strikingly familiar item. The man carried an Indiana University athletic backpack. For Steinmetz, a recent graduate from Indiana, it was a connection worth exploring.

Steinmetz soon learned the man’s name was Sampson James. Originally from Indiana, James had been experiencing homelessness for eight months. His story took an unexpected turn when Steinmetz discovered that James was once a four-star football recruit from Avon High School in Avon, Indiana. In 2019, James joined Indiana University’s football team as a freshman running back. He later transferred to Purdue in 2021 and returned as a walk-on to Indiana University in 2023.

“He was an amazing athlete, really a standout star,” Steinmetz recalled.

Unfortunately, James’s football career collapsed following a serious knee injury and a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. He left Indiana University without graduating in 2023 and soon lost everything except for his red school backpack.

The chance encounter with Steinmetz, a fellow Hoosier, sparked hope. “He was able to grasp and understand me,” James said of Steinmetz. Steinmetz decided to help. By June, he launched an online fundraiser for James, gathering $17,000 from supporters.

With these funds, Steinmetz arranged for James’s housing, prepaying rent and providing essentials. This meant James could move into a new apartment, marking a fresh beginning.

As they now walk together along the same path where they met, the future is promising. “Now that all these people donated and you got the apartment, they really want to see you succeed,” Steinmetz told James.

“Oh yeah, and I’m big on not letting them down,” James affirmed.
