Christopher Atkins Reflects on Career and Sobriety

Christopher Atkins, known for his starring role in The Blue Lagoon, shared insights about his career journey during a recent appearance at Fanboy Expo Knoxville in Tennessee. The event, which celebrates pop culture, featured Atkins’ frank discussion of past missteps and personal growth, as reported by People magazine.

Missing Out on ‘Footloose’

Atkins, now 65, revealed that his drinking habits cost him the lead role in the 1984 film Footloose, a role ultimately filled by Kevin Bacon. According to Atkins, filmmakers had requested a meeting with him, but he was unable to seize the opportunity due to his partying lifestyle.

“I was a mess back then,” Atkins admitted candidly. “I couldn’t meet them because I had been drinking.” He recalled attending an important audition, realizing he was unprepared due to his intoxication, and noting that the filmmakers subsequently decided to move on from him.

Reflecting on his current life, Atkins stated, “I’m almost 40 years sober.” This underscores a significant personal achievement in overcoming past challenges.

The Blue Lagoon Experience

Atkins reflected on his breakout role in The Blue Lagoon at age 18, opposite Brooke Shields. He mentioned that acting wasn’t his original ambition; rather, he had dreams of playing baseball. Despite his lack of experience, Atkins was cast in the film, which required him to adjust quickly to the demands of acting.

Atkins recounted the transformative impact of the film’s success. “My whole life changed,” he said, noting the overwhelming attention from media outlets and fans.

The movie itself was controversial due to its depiction of a sexual relationship between teenage characters. Shields used body doubles for nude scenes, and precautions were taken to ensure modesty during filming.

Atkins explained, “The crew made it easy. Randall [Kleiser], the director, emphasized the natural aspects of the characters’ environment.” He noted that nudity was portrayed naturally, aligning with the film’s thematic elements.

Life Beyond Movies

Reflecting on priorities, Atkins shared that his desire to be a father took precedence over pursuing fame in Hollywood. “I wanted to be a dad more than chase the business,” he said. During his youth, he saved money for the future, demonstrating his commitment to family values.

Having appeared in over 100 films and television shows, Atkins expressed gratitude for his career and personal journey. Now, with grandchildren, he hinted at future aspirations, including the goal to produce his own film.

“I’ve been blessed,” Atkins concluded, appreciating both his professional achievements and personal milestones.
