Elizabeth Mays from Aurora knows the excitement her grandson feels for trucks. He eagerly attended a special event to see them up close. This took place on a Saturday morning at the Aurora Regional Fire Museum. Mays remarked, “Kids love trucks. I think they enjoy these events because the trucks are so big and impressive, yet approachable.”
The museum hosted its ninth annual Community Hero Day. Children and parents interacted with various emergency vehicles and first responders. The four-hour event featured fire truck rides through downtown Aurora. There were opportunities to touch trucks, observe a live fire department demonstration, and attend a free CPR class. Activities like face painting and entertainment from a live DJ were available. Food vendors were present to ensure everyone stayed fueled for the fun.
Brian Failing, the museum’s executive director, highlighted the event’s history. “We started this event to unite community heroes from different services,” he explained. “We wanted to include police, fire, tollway services, and more.” The event showed off diverse community services, emphasizing fire and life safety.
Participants witnessed engaging fire demonstrations and learned from an extrication demo. The event regularly welcomes about 1,000 visitors each year. Failing noted that families enjoy interacting with emergency personnel and vehicles. Popular features include fire truck rides and the touch-a-truck experience.
Brittany Brunner of North Aurora explored a canine officer station during her first visit to Community Hero Day. She said, “Events like this bring the community together and highlight the services that support us.”
Brunner observed the event’s positive impact on children. She expressed hope that the exposure might inspire some to pursue careers as first responders in the future.
