Concerns Over Antisemitism Among Jewish Democrats

Rep. Becca Balint, D-Vt., recently shared her experiences and worries related to antisemitism within her own party during a conversation with CNN. She recounted an unsettling instance where a fellow House Democrat seemed to dismiss antisemitism by suggesting, ‘all the Jews are rich.’ This reflects a growing concern among Jewish political figures about antisemitism’s influence on grassroots campaigns and established leaders such as California state Sen. Scott Wiener.

Balint expressed that she felt ‘shaken to [her] core’ after witnessing Wiener being heckled by anti-Israel activists for his previous support for Israel and Jewish heritage. Despite aligning with progressive Democrats who criticize Israel’s actions in Gaza, Balint emphasized her belief in a two-state solution and the importance of a Jewish homeland. She fears backlash from her own supporters due to this stance.

Furthering these concerns, New York City comptroller Mark Levine highlighted the political challenges faced by Jewish Democrats. He mentioned that regardless of the political issue, it inevitably becomes tied to Israel, creating a ‘litmus test’ for Jewish politicians. While progressives are willing to critique Israel’s current government, Levine asserts that Jewish Democrats often feel excluded from many spaces.

Michigan state Rep. Noah Arbit voiced similar concerns about antisemitism being masked as criticism of Israel. He expressed uncertainty about his future affiliation with the Democratic Party due to the hostility from grassroots movements. Arbit questions the alignment of Jewish identity within political movements that appear unsupportive.
