Concerns Over Kratom’s Health Risks Following Student Deaths

The recent death of two University of Mississippi students has raised critical concerns regarding the potential health risks associated with kratom. Both students were located on campus on Monday, with investigations revealing packaged kratom procured from a retail store, as indicated by the Lafayette County Metro Narcotics news release.

Authorities have not yet established if kratom contributed to the fatalities. Kratom, a plant-based substance, is often marketed as a natural remedy for pain relief and opioid withdrawal. However, experts warn of dependence, perilous interactions, and severe health complications. Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News senior medical analyst, clarifies that at low doses kratom acts as a stimulant, which could trigger heart arrhythmia while high doses mimic opioids, potentially suppressing breathing.

Jessica Steinman, chief clinical officer at No Matter What Recovery in Los Angeles, mentions kratom’s increasing availability across local gas stations, smoke shops, and health food stores, frequently sold as an energy booster. She notes incorrect use of kratom often involves consuming excessive amounts, affecting opioid receptors in the brain, which may lead to sedation, impaired lung function, and potentially lethal consequences, especially when combined with alcohol or other substances.

The addictive nature of kratom is particularly concerning. While traditional kratom products contain lower active compound levels, 7-OH products are frequently concentrated or enhanced, yielding stronger effects. These products contain 7-hydroxymitragynine, a potent opioid-like substance. Despite variations in kratom legislation, regulators pay keen attention to concentrated 7-OH products and synthetic compounds.

Steinman suggests social media and peer circles might be influencing the growing kratom usage among young people, providing both stimulant and sedative effects appreciated by college students under academic and social pressure.

Indications of significant sedation include slow or shallow breathing; such cases require immediate medical scrutiny. Kratom withdrawal can lead to seizures, necessitating emergency medical attention.

Steinman warns against the misconception that natural substances are inherently safe, emphasizing the addictive potential of kratom and its impact on opioid receptors.
