Adm. Brad Cooper, leader of U.S. Central Command, recently praised the crew of the USS Abraham Lincoln for their resilience. His comments came amid concerns about mental health and deteriorating conditions aboard the aircraft carrier.
In interviews with NBC News and other outlets, family members of crew members described insufficient supplies and food. They also mentioned a worsening mental health situation, with multiple sailors attempting to jump overboard. The ship has been at sea for over 200 days without a port call, which has set a modern-day record according to Democratic lawmakers who are demanding answers.
Cooper said in a social media statement that the Lincoln had the lowest number of mental health cases among the Navy’s 11 active aircraft carriers. He acknowledged the challenges of long deployments, noting, “Find any of the nearly 4 million Navy veterans in America today and they will likely tell you that service at sea for long periods isn’t for everyone. It is uniquely challenging and tough, and every single one of us, including me, reacts to stressors in different ways.”
He emphasized that mental health needs attention similar to physical and spiritual health. Cooper praised the Lincoln’s leadership, especially senior enlisted leaders, for prioritizing mental health and crew resilience.
The USS Abraham Lincoln left San Diego in November and was redirected to the Middle East to support U.S. military operations. The carrier has approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth claimed reports about the ship’s conditions were misleading. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump dismissed concerns about the deployment length, labeling it “not nearly long enough.”
The USS George Washington is set to replace the Lincoln in the Middle East. A U.S. official indicated it may take several weeks for this replacement to be completed. The Lincoln’s return journey to San Diego is expected to last at least two weeks.
