Concerns Over Racism and School Funding Inequality Discussed by ‘The View’ Co-Host

The View co-host Sunny Hostin recently highlighted issues of racism her children faced in predominantly White private schools during a discussion on educational inequality. Hostin empathized with Nikole Hannah-Jones, 1619 Project founder and reporter for The New York Times Magazine, who expressed regret over sending her daughter to underprivileged Black public schools in Brooklyn. Both public and private educational settings pose unique challenges, especially for Black families.

Hostin discussed how her children encountered psychological trauma and racism despite excelling academically. She shared instances of bullying and identity challenges faced by her daughter, who has a large afro. These experiences contrast with Hannah-Jones’ reported academic struggles for her daughter.

“I think this is a decision broadly that all parents make when it comes to educating their kids, but this is a very difficult decision for Black parents, in particular,” Hostin said. “There was psychological trauma, there was racism that they experienced.”

Hostin pointed to systemic issues in education, with predominantly non-White districts receiving $23 billion less annually than their White counterparts, affecting public school funding derived from property taxes. This underfunding highlights a major challenge in achieving equality in education.

Hannah-Jones emphasized the need to focus on families lacking resources to access better schools, rather than her personal decisions. She expressed hoping for more concern for those unable to afford better educational options.

“I hope people concerned about the choice my husband and I made for our daughter will have equal or more outrage for the thousands of Black children whose parents don’t have the resources to send them to better schools,” Hannah-Jones said.

Hostin agreed that public education for Black children requires more attention. Fox News Digital sought responses from ABC and the private school Hostin’s children attended, but no comments were received. The dialogue underlines the complex choices Black families face regarding educational environments.
