Controversial Call Costs Rams in Game Against Broncos

6 minutes ago 0

In the NFL, officials sometimes make calls that are later acknowledged as mistakes. This occurred during the Sunday Night Football game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Denver Broncos. The controversy centered around a pass interference call on Rams defensive back Josh Wallace, which the league later admitted was incorrect.

Rams coach Sean McVay reported that the league communicated to him that the call should not have been made. This error negated a crucial interception by the Rams with just over a minute left in the game, while they were leading 26-23. Instead, it resulted in a pass interference penalty against Wallace, giving the Broncos a first-and-goal on the Rams’ 7-yard line. Eventually, this led to a touchdown for the Broncos and a 30-26 victory.

Despite the contact between Wallace and Broncos wide receiver Pat Bryant, officiating in the NFL typically leans towards allowing players to determine the outcome of games. However, referee Bill Vinovich’s crew intervened in this instance, significantly impacting the result.

The NFL won’t overturn the game’s result. The Rams still record the loss in their standings, while the Broncos maintain their win. However, the league’s acknowledgment of the mistake provides some level of satisfaction for the Rams.

NBC’s officiating analyst Terry McAulay also weighed in on the controversy. Upon reviewing the play, McAulay stated there was no interference, disagreeing with Vinovich’s crew. His assessment was noted during the broadcast, aligning with McVay and the Rams’ perspective.

While the NFL’s admission doesn’t change the outcome, it highlights the importance of accurate officiating and transparency. The acknowledgment by the league and commentary from figures like McAulay contribute to an ongoing discussion about officiating in the NFL.
