Cubs Third Baseman Bregman Injured by Foul Ball

Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman suffered a facial injury during Sunday’s 9-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds. The incident occurred when teammate Michael Busch hit a foul ball that bounced off the dirt and struck Bregman in the face while he waited in the on-deck circle at Great American Ball Park.

The foul ball hit Bregman squarely on the left side of his face. In visible pain, Bregman ran toward the visitors’ dugout, holding his face. Medical staff escorted him to the clubhouse, and Matt Shaw replaced him at third base.

Later, Cubs manager Craig Counsell confirmed that the ball hit Bregman on the left cheekbone. This caused a laceration under his eye, nosebleed, and swelling. Bregman was then taken to a local Cincinnati hospital for CT scans and X-rays to assess orbital and cheek fractures.

Despite the injury, Bregman posted an update on his Instagram showing his swollen eye and nose plugged, expressing gratitude for the support. He assured fans that he plans to return soon.

The Cubs cleared Bregman to travel back to Chicago with the team Sunday night. His potential absence could impact the Cubs as they face a tight National League Wild Card race with only one week left in the regular season. The team might rely on Shaw and Pedro Ramirez at third base if Bregman must go on the injured list.

This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers players face on the field. Last year, players such as Rays reliever Hunter Bigge and Cleveland’s David Fry also suffered serious injuries during games.
