Controversial Foul in Fever-Sky Game Sparks Discussion

The recent clash between Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham and Chicago Sky’s DiJonai Carrington has stirred significant attention. During a game that saw the Fever win 90-86, an aggressive play led to Cunningham leaving the court with a bloody mouth. The foul committed by Carrington was severe enough to be classified as a Flagrant 2, resulting in her ejection.

The incident occurred with two minutes left in the first quarter. Sports Illustrated published a story titled “Sophie Cunningham Got a Bitter Taste of Karma After Drawing Flagrant Foul in Fever-Sky,” which led to widespread reaction online. Many saw the reference to “karma” as connected to Cunningham’s previous statements on transgender athletes in women’s sports.

The story by Kristen Wong was subsequently updated to the title: “Sophie Cunningham’s Enforcer Role Gets Reversed Onto Her With Hard Foul in Fever-Sky.” This adjustment followed backlash over the initial title.

The “karma” commentary in Sports Illustrated’s article harkened back to a 2025 foul by Cunningham, where she similarly committed a Flagrant 2 foul on Jacy Sheldon, then of the Connecticut Sun. Cunningham voiced her understanding of receiving such a foul herself, acknowledging her past actions and stating that she deserved her ejection in that previous instance.

The tension surrounding the event extended to social media, where Carrington’s post with the words “WHITE PRIVILEGE” added to the controversy. Asked about the post, Cunningham stated, “We saw it. I think the league is taking care of that. I mean, this has nothing to do with race.”

Following the altercation, Indiana head coach Stephanie White defended Carrington’s competitive nature. She stated, “Yeah, I mean, look, it was a hard foul. I don’t think that DiJonai intentionally came out to get her across the neck like she did. But it did happen and I thought it was the right call.” White refrained from commenting on Carrington’s social media post.
