New York Democratic congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier discussed a recent shooting incident involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer and a Dominican Republic national, Oscar Belgal, with Twitch streamer Hasan Piker. Chevalier stated that Belgal’s criminal record was irrelevant in the context of the shooting.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that Belgal, who is illegally in the United States, was shot during a targeted arrest operation by an ICE officer after refusing to comply with lawful orders. The incident has raised questions about the justification for using force, given Belgal’s criminal history, including prior arrests for robbery and drug-related charges, and ties to the Trinitarios street gang.
Piker questioned the necessity of highlighting Belgal’s criminal past and argued with Chevalier that it did not justify the shooting. Chevalier stated, “It doesn’t even matter.”
During the confrontation, Belgal allegedly moved his vehicle forward, prompting at least one officer to fire seven rounds, striking him below his left ear. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch provided details at a news conference, highlighting Belgal’s previous criminal activities.
Chevalier criticized Tisch for allegedly attempting to “villainize” Belgal during the news conference instead of condemning ICE’s actions. Chevalier asserted that Tisch’s remarks extended beyond Belgal, potentially affecting others in similar situations.
An NYPD spokesperson defended Tisch’s comments, stating that criminal history is routinely included in incident updates and is frequently requested by media outlets.
Chevalier labeled ICE as a “rogue” agency, and progressive figures criticized ICE’s role in the shooting.
The New York State Republican Committee countered Chevalier’s comments. Communications director David Laska described the incident as lawful force applied to an illegal immigrant resisting arrest. Laska suggested Chevalier’s stance indicated extremism within the Democratic Party.
As the situation develops, public debates over ICE’s actions and broader immigration policies continue. With scrutiny from various political perspectives, the incident remains a point of tension in New York’s political landscape.
