The New Orleans Saints are facing increasing pressure following their 1-4 start to the NFL season. The concerns are not limited to the fan base. On Tuesday, Saints principal owner Gayle Benson expressed her dissatisfaction with the team’s performance just days after they suffered their third straight loss.

Benson openly criticized the team’s record during the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club luncheon. She pointed out that such results are unacceptable and fall short of what fans deserve. Benson acknowledged the commitment fans have to the Saints and their right to expect better performance.

Quarterback Tyler Shough had shown potential during his rookie year, which raised hopes for a strong run in the NFC South under head coach Kellen Moore’s leadership. However, a close overtime defeat by the Detroit Lions in the opening game predicted a challenging season. Despite a win in Week 2, the Saints faced losses against the Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, and Minnesota Vikings in subsequent weeks.

“It falls short of what our fans truly deserve,” Benson said, emphasizing that fans invest their time and emotions in the Saints. She addressed the frustration aimed at the team while also taking personal responsibility for the team’s current struggles during a rare public statement. Benson made it clear that the team’s direction needs change.

Benson urged head coach Kellen Moore and general manager Mickey Loomis to meet their responsibilities. She stated that coaches must prepare players effectively, while the staff must build a roster capable of sustained success. Benson noted her role in holding the organization accountable and called for improved preparation, consistent execution, and error correction.

Despite criticism, Benson had previously supported Loomis’s longstanding role in the team’s management. She emphasized her commitment to making necessary decisions to enhance the team’s performance. Benson highlighted her disappointment over the anniversary game loss to the Atlanta Falcons, a significant event commemorating the Superdome’s reopening post-Hurricane Katrina.

Moving forward, Benson insisted that words alone will not restore fans’ confidence. She called for tangible progress on the field to regain trust. The Saints face crucial upcoming matches against the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers, which will test their ability to recover this season.
