Controversy Surrounds Sydney Sweeney’s Recent Ad

4 hours ago 0

Sydney Sweeney, known for her role in HBO’s Euphoria, has recently faced criticism for her appearance in a provocative ad for the sports trading app Novig. The ad features Sweeney posing with sports equipment covering her mostly nude body, which has stirred reactions among professional athletes.

Australian Olympic gold medalist swimmer Ariarne Titmus expressed her displeasure, questioning why monetizing and sexualizing women’s sports remain prevalent. Titmus shared her frustrations on Instagram, igniting a conversation about the portrayal of female athletes.

British sprinter Amy Hunt and former American gymnast Gracie Kramer also voiced their concerns. Hunt, after competing in Budapest, emphasized the importance of recognizing the efforts of female athletes, noting that sports are about hard work and dedication.

Kramer, having experienced oversexualization in gymnastics, stated how such representations undermine the serious work female athletes perform. She expressed her outrage on social media, highlighting ongoing struggles for recognition beyond physical appearance.

In response to the criticism, Sweeney pointed to ESPN magazine covers that showcase nude athletes, including notable figures like Serena Williams and Ronda Rousey, suggesting that such portrayals are not uncommon.

Sweeney was previously criticized for collaborating with American Eagle on a fall clothing campaign. Her recent ad and the ensuing controversy have sparked debates about the portrayal of women in sports and media.

Fox News Digital and OutKick both sought comments from Sweeney’s representatives and Novig, respectively. The discussion continues as different perspectives emerge on the issue.
