Country Singer Zach Top on the Authenticity in Country Music

Country artist Zach Top recently expressed his thoughts on the current state of country music, stating that it sounds ‘perfect’ but may have lost some of its ‘soul.’ In an interview with Rolling Stone, the 28-year-old musician discussed his new song, “Good Girls & Cowgirls,” and the growing popularity of bluegrass music.

“From my perspective, it’s pretty similar to why my music is popular now,” he said. “In the country world, everything is precisely tuned, and some of the soul got left behind.” Top believes people are seeking more raw and genuine sounds, which is why bluegrass resonates with listeners. “In bluegrass, there’s nothing covering you up,” he noted.

Top mentioned notable artists like Tyler Childers and Zach Bryan, who embrace a ‘real and raw’ sound. He said, “You’re not chasing perfection. You’re playing good music with heart and soul. That’s what bluegrass is to me.” Known for his traditional honky-tonk sound, Top is seen as one of the younger artists contributing to a revival of traditional country music.

Top released his first EP in 2022 and debuted at the Grand Ole Opry the same year. His breakthrough came in 2024 with his debut album, “Cold Beer & Country Music.” In 2025, he released a second album, “Ain’t In It for My Health,” and won both ACM New Male Artist of the Year and CMA New Artist of the Year. Reflecting on his win, Top said, “I brought a beer up on stage, and we’ll celebrate with the road crew, maybe get to bed before 5 AM.”

As for his latest project, the song “Good Girls & Cowgirls” is set for official release on August 21, alongside another track, “Other Side of Hurtin’.” Although his third album’s release date isn’t confirmed, Top hopes it will be available by April. Describing the new song, he said, “It’s about the contrast between ‘good girls’ and the wild side. I think folks will enjoy it, and it’ll be on the new record next spring.”
