FIFA President Gianni Infantino faces allegations of abusing his power by arranging VIP airport escorts for his family in Miami. Sources and records indicate that his wife and daughters frequently received special treatment at Miami International Airport. These records show his family appeared 125 times in the airport’s protocol logs since January 2024, with 95 entries listing multiple family members per entry.
Experts criticize Infantino’s use of FIFA resources for personal gain. Records reveal that his wife, Leena Infantino, is documented in the logs 46 times, nearly doubling Gianni’s 24 appearances. Airport spokesperson Greg Chin confirmed that FIFA requested the service, citing availability of staff as the reason for fulfilling these requests.
The issue raises ethical concerns, with the FIFA code prohibiting personal use of official privileges. Antoine Duval from the T.M.C. Asser Institute suggests this could be an abuse of position. Arnout Geeraert from Utrecht University supports this view, describing it as an abuse of power. Duval notes that many complaints lodged against Infantino have previously been overlooked by FIFA’s ethics committee.
FIFA justified the requests as standard protocol for Infantino’s position. A statement from FIFA claims the requests were based on advice from a former advisor, adhering to the airport’s Courtesies of Port Handbook, with services granted at no charge on a case-by-case basis.
During the World Cup, VIP access for the Infantino family increased. The records show they received VIP treatment 15 times in 39 days, without Gianni present. Notably, his sisters and additional family members were granted similar privileges.
The Miami International Airport protocol allows for various VIP guests, but its guidelines do not specifically include family of NGO leaders. The airport insists on a comprehensive vetting process for all requests overseen by the protocol division’s director.
The issue underscores broader criticism of Infantino’s management. His proposals for expanding tournaments and conflicts with UEFA have drawn backlash. Additionally, he is involved in controversies including securing a work permit for his housekeeper. Despite denial from FIFA, evidence suggests misuse of resources for his re-election campaign.
