The Chicago Cubs recently experienced a significant shift in their standings in the National League Central. Following a promising 10-game winning streak, their momentum stalled. After a 5-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday, the Cubs no longer hold the top position in their division. The team has struggled, losing four consecutive games and winning only two of their last ten. They now face the possibility of a series sweep by the Brewers at Wrigley Field.
Ian Happ, who had a challenging 0-for-3 game with two strikeouts, reflected on the season. ‘Every year has periods like that,’ he noted. Happ emphasized the importance of consistency, stating, ‘There’s pros and cons to winning 10 straight twice and having the record we have. But when you reflect on the whole thing, we’re sitting in a good spot.’
‘If you would have told us this was going to be our record at this point in the season, I think everybody would have signed up for it,’ Happ added.
In the game, Ben Brown started for the Cubs, delivering a solid performance. Brown has faced challenges in past seasons, often letting a good start unravel. The Cubs have worked on his pitch mix, adding a sinker and a changeup, to reduce predictability. Against the Brewers, Brown encountered early difficulties, allowing three runs in the first three innings.
A critical moment came in the fourth inning. A dropped fly ball and a bunt single put the Cubs in a tough spot. However, Brown maintained his composure, striking out two batters and securing a groundout to limit the damage. Manager Craig Counsell praised Brown’s efforts, saying, ‘Ben’s making progress. I thought it was another good outing.’
Brown completed five innings, allowing three runs, which elevated his season ERA to 2.09. Despite the loss, Cubs fans found encouragement in his development.
The Cubs’ offense struggled against Brewers’ pitcher Jacob Misiorowski. He gave up three hits and one walk while striking out eight over six innings. Misiorowski’s fastball, reaching up to 101.5 mph, challenged the Cubs’ batters, preventing them from getting runners into scoring position until late in the game.
Although the Cubs had a chance in the first inning, they failed to capitalize. Later, in the eighth inning, a brief rally produced two runs but was quickly halted. Aaron Ashby and Chad Patrick combined efforts for the Brewers to silence the Cubs’ late surge.
‘We’ve got 115 games to go,’ Counsell stated. ‘They beat us the first two games — they beat us for sure, flat out. We’ve got to come out tomorrow and try to salvage a game.’
