Darron Lee, a former NFL linebacker, is facing serious legal charges this offseason. A Hamilton County, Tennessee grand jury indicted Lee for first-degree murder. The charge relates to the death of his girlfriend, Gabriela Carvalho Perpétuo. Lee, picked in the first round by the New York Jets in 2016, also played for the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills.
Domestic Violence Allegations
Lee experienced legal trouble in the past. He was arrested on February 6, 2025, by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. Besides the murder charge, Lee faced accusations of tampering with evidence. The District Attorney, Coty Wamp, highlighted the case’s potential for a capital punishment sentence. Currently, prosecutors have dismissed the tampering charge to concentrate on the murder allegation.
“We will focus solely on the murder of Gabriela,” Wamp stated.
Lee’s case takes an unusual turn due to allegations of manipulating a crime scene with the assistance of ChatGPT. Reports suggest he consulted the AI to simulate an accidental death falling in the shower. He inquired about injuries consistent with such accidents.
Details from the Crime Scene
Detective Brian Lockhart from Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office testified in court about the crime scene’s violent nature. Bloodstains marked the staircase, handrails, and nearly every room. Shattered microwave glass and scattered glass added to the scene’s chaos. Investigators discovered cleaning supplies like bleach wipes and a spray bottle, possibly used to alter evidence.
Lee reportedly contacted police, claiming he found Perpétuo unresponsive. He suggested a fall in the shower might explain her condition. However, an autopsy refuted this claim.
Autopsy Findings
The autopsy revealed multiple severe injuries on Perpétuo. She suffered brain traumas, a broken neck, and extensive bruising. Inspectors found bite marks on her body, stab wounds on her legs, and facial lacerations. The cause of death was identified as blunt force trauma.
Previous records indicate Lee’s involvement in 2023 violence in Ohio, where he assaulted a woman. He was on probation linked to this case during the Tennessee bond hearing. Furthermore, Lee was on probation for a Florida conviction of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His unauthorized relocation to Tennessee violated parole terms.
NFL and Domestic Abuse
Lee, who hasn’t played in the NFL since 2020, remains in custody without bond. His indictment adds to growing concerns over domestic abuse in the NFL. This offseason, at least nine players have faced serious allegations of similar nature. The NFL abstains from commenting on these incidents.
Legal Proceedings
An arraignment date for Lee’s murder indictment in Hamilton County Criminal Court is pending. During his career, he contributed three years to the Jets, one to the Chiefs, and another to the Bills.
