Debunked Claims of Celebrity Endorsements for Trump

President Donald Trump has frequently shared endorsements, some of which have proven false. One such recent claim involved a post on Truth Social where Trump shared a quote attributed to actor Denzel Washington. The quote praised Trump as brave, smart, and a dedicated American, expressing unwavering support. However, fact-checkers have debunked this as false.

On October 10, Snopes published a fact-check confirming that there is no credible evidence to support that Washington made such statements. Research found no legitimate sources with Washington voicing support for Trump. Moreover, records from the Federal Election Commission show that Washington has financially supported Democratic candidates in the past, including contributions to Barack Obama’s and Hillary Clinton’s campaigns.

The quote has also been incorrectly attributed to other celebrities like Matthew McConaughey and Mick Jagger, with no evidence supporting such claims.

Newsweek reached out to Washington’s publicist at PMK Entertainment and the White House for comments on this issue.

Previous False Claims

This isn’t the first time Washington finds himself wrongly linked to political endorsements. In 2016, reports circulated that he supported Trump and criticized Obama, but his publicist, Alan Nierob, quickly debunked these as complete fabrications. Other stories have falsely stated Washington had switched political allegiances, yet consistent fact-checking reveals these claims as unfounded.

In a similar pattern, in August 2024, Trump’s Truth Social account shared a claim that JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon endorsed him. The bank refuted this, stating Dimon had endorsed no one. Trump responded to NBC News, claiming he was unaware of the post’s origin.

False endorsements also became an issue with other high-profile figures like Taylor Swift. AI-generated images suggested her supporters backed Trump. In reality, Swift later endorsed former Vice President Kamala Harris, referencing these false images as a catalyst for making her position public.
