Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member Angie Nixon has defeated the establishment-backed candidate, Alexander Vindman, in a Florida state primary. Nixon, a state lawmaker known for her progressive activism, won by more than 10 percentage points. Despite Vindman’s $16.3 million campaign fund, Nixon’s campaign operated with approximately $1 million.
In April, Nixon made headlines with a protest inside the Florida Legislature. She used a bullhorn to oppose a redistricting bill supported by Governor Ron DeSantis. Wearing a pink jumpsuit and holding a pink megaphone, she declared, “This is a violation of the Constitution!” as the final vote took place. The bill passed with a vote of 83-28, despite Nixon’s protests.
In May, Nixon was arrested for protesting in Governor DeSantis’ office over the same redistricting measure. She was released shortly afterward. Nixon identifies as a DSA member and continues to advocate for socialist policies.
Nixon has publicly criticized resolutions honoring Charlie Kirk, calling it “beyond disrespectful,” and labeling Kirk as promoting hatred against Black people. She also claimed Kirk, after his assassination, had views that were “homophobic, antisemitic, and misogynistic.”
Her campaign platform includes a “working families guarantee,” advocating for Medicare for all, free childcare, a national rent freeze, and a universal jobs program with inflation-adjusted wages. To fund these initiatives, she suggests taxing billionaires and focusing on domestic needs over foreign military expenditures.
Nixon also supports abolishing ICE and restructuring immigration enforcement. She states, “I don’t believe any person is illegal,” and aims to shift from punitive to healing measures. Nixon’s views extend to policing as well, endorsing demilitarization and investment in community-based public safety and violence prevention strategies.
Furthermore, she has accused the U.S. of contributing to genocide in Palestine. Nixon continues to be an influential voice within the DSA and a representative challenging traditional political norms in Florida.
