House Democrats Refer Energy Secretary to DOJ

Two House Democrats, Zoe Lofgren from California and Gabe Amo from Rhode Island, have formally referred Energy Secretary Chris Wright to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for potential prosecution. They accuse him of lying to Congress about the cancellation of green grants, suggesting they were ended for partisan reasons.

In a public letter released on Wednesday, Lofgren and Amo claim that Wright’s testimony inaccurately stated that billions of climate-related funds were not canceled due to their potential benefit to Democratic states.

Secretary Wright lied to the Committee with his statements, which sought to prevent us from learning the truth: that the October award terminations were an act of political retaliation.

They assert he violated federal law 18 USC §1001 by making materially false statements to Congress.

The referral could escalate tensions over the nearly $8 billion in funding that was cut by the Trump administration last year. Despite the referral, it does not guarantee DOJ action or confirm wrongdoing by Wright.

An Energy Department spokesperson, responding anonymously, insisted that political considerations did not influence the cancellation decisions and upheld Wright’s testimony as accurate.

This development adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing friction over significant climate funding cuts.
