Democrats Respond to Supreme Court Ruling on Transgender Athletes

Congressional Democrats face internal division following the Supreme Court’s decision on transgender athletes and sports teams. The ruling allows states to bar biological males from competing in girls’ and women’s school sports, impacting laws in Idaho, West Virginia, and 25 other states.

Progressive Democrats criticized the court’s decision, while many Democratic leaders have not issued public statements or outlined legislative responses. Rep. Sarah Jacobs, a key supporter of transgender rights, expressed commitment to supporting trans youth but did not indicate specific legislative actions.

The Congressional Equality Caucus and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also refrained from detailing any legislative responses. The Equality Caucus expressed disappointment online, describing the ruling as “devastating” for transgender athletes.

Public opinion shows significant opposition to transgender athletes in women’s sports, with a 2025 survey from The New York Times finding that nearly 80% of Americans oppose biological males competing in women’s sports. This includes roughly 70% of Democrats or those who lean Democrat.

Centrist Democrats have largely stayed quiet about the ruling. Rep. Don Davis of North Carolina, facing re-election in a Republican-leaning district, supported the court’s decision to affirm states’ rights to separate sports teams based on biological sex.

Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington recognized nuanced views on women’s sports, acknowledging that people’s concerns often revolve around athletic scholarships for their girls.

The Senate has seen limited responses. While some Democratic lawmakers vow to continue fighting for transgender athletes, specific plans to counter the ruling remain undiscussed. Sen. Ed Markey, a prominent advocate for LGBTQ rights, criticized the ruling as discriminatory, while Sen. Elizabeth Warren accused “right-wing extremists” of targeting trans communities.
