The Los Angeles Dodgers face a critical moment in the National League Championship Series (NLCS) against the Milwaukee Brewers. After going down 2-0 in the series, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts faces a tough decision regarding Shohei Ohtani’s place in the lineup heading into Game 3 at Dodger Stadium.
Despite Ohtani’s recent struggles, Roberts has decided to keep the Japanese superstar in the lineup. Ohtani has been dealing with a left knee and right arm issues, contributing to his slump at the plate. His postseason batting average has dropped to .150, with no extra-base hits or RBIs. This performance decline led to questions about his role in Game 3.
In discussions with the Dodgers’ president of baseball operations, Andrew Friedman, and general manager Brandon Gomes, Roberts affirmed his belief in Ohtani’s abilities. He stated, “He was very convicted that he is onto something mechanically. He was adamant that he can help us win a baseball game.”
Through his interpreter, Will Ireton, Ohtani expressed his determination to improve his performance despite his physical challenges. “The symptoms shouldn’t be the reason why I can’t hit,” Ohtani remarked, taking full responsibility for his October performance.
“He’s close to finding something with his swing,” Roberts said, reflecting his confidence in Ohtani’s ability to contribute effectively.
Ohtani’s issues are not new, as he faced similar challenges during the regular season, including a stint on the injured list. His last home run came on August 18, marking a significant dry spell for the slugger.
Roberts’ decision to maintain Ohtani in the lineup for Game 3 underscores his unwavering confidence in the player’s potential impact. It remains to be seen how this choice will play out in what many consider a must-win scenario for the Dodgers as they aim to regain momentum.
