Doug Lang Leads Portage Parks Department

Doug Lang, formerly the Property Manager at Indiana Dunes State Park, is now serving as Portage’s parks superintendent, starting his tenure on Thursday. Park Board President Andy Maletta spent time with Lang on his first day, expressing confidence in Lang’s leadership capabilities.

“Our goal is for you to take a leadership role and for us to get out of your way,” Maletta told Lang.

Mayor Austin Bonta announced Lang’s hiring, praising him as the best choice among several qualified candidates. Bonta noted Lang’s character, experience, vision, and leadership as significant assets for the city’s parks.

Portage has recently initiated new investments in its parks, aiming to enhance the city’s quality of life. With Lang at the helm, Bonta is optimistic about the direction Portage parks will take.

Previous park superintendents’ tenures were short; however, Maletta highlighted Lang’s extensive experience, which sets him apart. Lang’s background includes event management, groundskeeping at Indiana’s top state parks, and staff leadership.

The Park Board emphasized the importance of experience and leadership skills. Maletta found Lang’s interview impressive, noting his informed perspective on the city’s parks system.

Lang is actively familiarizing himself with Portage’s parks, implementing a strategic plan for his first 30, 60, and 90 days. Maletta sees this as an opportunity for Lang to delve into the parks’ needs and develop actionable strategies.
