Palmetto State Democrats have selected Dr. Annie Andrews, a pediatrician, as their candidate to likely face incumbent Senator Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., in the upcoming November election. Andrews recently won a three-way primary contest in South Carolina, positioning her as a contender against Graham, who seeks a fifth term in office.
Andrews is well-known in South Carolina politics, partly because the state hasn’t elected a Democrat to the Senate since the 1990s, with former Senator Fritz Hollings being the last to serve in the upper chamber until his retirement in 2005.
Andrews’ primary focus is to unseat Graham; she also targets Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., pledging to spearhead efforts to impeach and remove Kennedy during a rally with voters.
The Senate does not start impeachment proceedings but acts as the final step in the process. In an op-ed for MS Now published earlier this year, Andrews noted Kennedy’s role in the anti-vaccine movement, suggesting that it has caused communities to fall below the herd immunity threshold, leading to outbreaks like measles.
Andrews expressed that rebuilding trust takes time and can’t be restored quickly, arguing for responsible leadership in Health and Human Services.
Meanwhile, Graham is engaging in a six-way primary competition, including businessman Mark Lynch. This contest tests President Donald Trump’s endorsement influence against the waning enthusiasm of his Make America Great Again movement.
Lynch, who presents himself as a constitutional conservative, was endorsed by Trump’s former National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent. Kent urged voters to support Lynch to oppose Graham, whom he labeled as a warhawk and neocon.
