Ed Markey’s Victory Highlights Progressive Momentum in Democratic Politics

Hasan Piker, a Twitch streamer and far-left activist, celebrated the victory of Senator Ed Markey, D-Mass., in a primary election. Markey, an 80-year-old progressive, defeated a younger, centrist candidate, Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass. Piker remarked on the outcome, emphasizing voter preference for policies over age, stating, “It’s very clear that the Dem voters care more about policies and having a progressive represent them in the Senate than age! Another win for our movement!”

Generational Change vs. Progressive Consistency

Moulton’s campaign focused on generational change. However, Markey positioned himself as the true progressive candidate. He questioned Moulton’s progressive credentials and continued to advocate for transgender rights in sports, an issue many Democrats hesitate to address. Moulton argued that this stance contributed to Democratic losses in the 2024 elections.

“Trans athletes should be able to play,” Markey told The New York Times.

This reflects Massachusetts’ values, contrasting with Moulton’s views.

Progressive Support and Environmental Advocacy

Markey’s climate change platform has garnered support, including from the Sunrise Movement. This group, focused on a Green New Deal, congratulated him on his Massachusetts victory. Markey, backed by prominent progressives like Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Ayanna Pressley, has been a key proponent of climate and progressive policies.

David Axelrod, a former advisor to President Obama, noted Markey’s transformation over his political career. Once a social conservative, Markey shifted towards progressive issues like the Green New Deal and Medicare for All.

Endorsements and Progressive Solidarity

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., praised Markey’s primary win. Sanders highlighted the need for congressional action on income inequality and support for working families. The victory underscores Markey’s alignment with progressive principles despite the age gap with younger candidates.

“Congratulations to Ed Markey on his landslide victory in the Democratic Massachusetts Senate primary,” Sanders wrote.

Markey is now set to face the general election on November 3, with strong prospects in the Democratic-leaning state. In prior elections, he won with a significant margin over his Republican opponent.
