Egypt Coach Dedicates World Cup Victory to Egyptians and Palestinians

The recent World Cup victory by Egypt has garnered attention due to a heartfelt gesture by the country’s coach, Hossam Hassan. After Egypt defeated Australia in the elimination round, Hassan waved a Palestinian flag on the pitch. He announced that he was dedicating the win to both Egyptians and Palestinians, expressing his solidarity with them. Hassan stated, “My heart and soul are with them.”

Egypt made a remarkable entry into the elimination round by securing a win against Australia, 4-2, on penalty kicks after concluding the round of 32 with a 1-1 draw. This victory is significant, as it marks Egypt’s debut in the elimination stage during their fourth World Cup appearance.

A video of Hassan’s action circulated widely on social media, capturing him walking across the field with the flag while the crowd chanted support for Palestine. Former head of Egypt’s Journalists’ Union, Yahia Qalash, described Hassan’s move as a poignant and significant moment in a time of extreme tension.

The ongoing conflict in Gaza, initiated by Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has left over 2 million Palestinians displaced and living amid destruction. Israel’s retaliatory actions have resulted in the deaths of 73,066 Palestinians as reported by Gaza’s Health Ministry. These events have ignited pro-Palestinian demonstrations globally, with individuals, including athletes, showing support.

Notably, Spanish footballer Lamine Yamal previously waved a Palestinian flag during his team’s championship celebration, which led to criticism from Israel’s defense minister, labeling the act as inciting hatred. Unlike many athletes or public figures, Hassan is regarded as apolitical, having risen to fame as a street footballer in Egypt during the 1980s and 1990s.

Hassan expressed that he was dedicating the game to the “good and noble” people of Egypt and Palestine. Regarding the waving of the Palestinian flag, FIFA confirmed its permissibility, stating that flags of all member associations are allowed during their tournaments. There is no suggestion of any disciplinary measures against Hassan.

FIFA’s statement emphasized that all 211 member associations’ flags can be displayed at FIFA events, aligning with the stadium regulations and the FIFA Stadium Code of Conduct. The Palestine Football Association is included among FIFA’s member organizations, reinforcing the legitimacy of Hassan’s gesture.

While FIFA has restricted political expressions on the pitch, such as during the Qatar World Cup in 2022, when some teams were barred from wearing anti-discrimination armbands, Hassan’s act stands out for its allowance by the governing body. There have been cases where flags have been contentious, such as attempts to display Iran’s pre-revolutionary flag during this World Cup, which led to legal challenges in the U.S.
