Pete Crow-Armstrong’s Frustration Over Missed Balk Against Diamondbacks

Chicago Cubs’ star player Pete Crow-Armstrong experienced a heated moment during a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks when he argued that an evident balk was missed by the umpires. The incident occurred in the top of the sixth inning of a scoreless game. Crow-Armstrong took a considerable lead from third base, suggesting he might steal home.

Arizona’s pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez delivered a quick pitch while Michael Busch was batting. Crow-Armstrong believed Rodriguez committed a balk, which would have enabled him to score and give the Cubs the lead. After expressing his frustrations vocally, the umpires convened but concluded no balk occurred. This decision agitated Crow-Armstrong further.

Chicago Cubs third base coach Quintin Berry restrained Crow-Armstrong as he argued with the umpiring crew. Cubs manager Craig Counsell also got involved to calm the situation.

Post-game, Crow-Armstrong shared his disappointment: “I saw four umpires miss a pretty obvious play. They’re out there every day, just like we are. Their one job is to get calls right, and if they get it wrong, they’re supposed to talk about it, figure it out, and get it right. And they didn’t.” Crew chief Alfonso Márquez acknowledged the mistake, admitting a balk should have been called.

No player or official faced ejection despite the intensity of the exchange. The Diamondbacks capitalized on the momentum shift by scoring in the bottom of the sixth and extending their lead in the eighth inning. Ultimately, they handed the Cubs a 2-0 loss.

With this defeat, the Cubs have dropped four of their last six games, trimming their lead in the National League Wild Card standings to a precarious two-game margin over the surging Philadelphia Phillies.
