John Mills Elementary in Elmwood Park has been recognized as a 2026 Governor’s Blue Ribbon School. The distinction, awarded on October 20, highlighted the school as one of only 24 in Illinois to receive this honor. The recognition emphasizes high academic performance, particularly in closing achievement gaps between various student groups.

Leah Gauthier, superintendent of Schools for District 401, expressed pride in this accomplishment. She emphasized that it reflects years of effort by the staff, students, and support from the board and local community. Gauthier, who has led the district for ten years, noted that the school aimed to exceed state performance averages and achieved that goal after consistent efforts.

The school surpassed the state average in English two years back, and soon after, it did the same in math. The blue ribbon designation acknowledges John Mills Elementary as an Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing School, highlighting success across all student groups rather than just individual cohorts.

On October 20, district leaders, including Gov. J.B. Pritzker, gathered at an assembly to present the award. Gauthier credited the School Board for supporting the mission. She acknowledged needing additional resources to realize their goals and praised the board for providing the necessary backing.

Reflecting on the district’s collaborative nature, Gauthier remarked, “When things get tough, we are a small district. When somebody needs something, we’re there for one another.” She attributed the accomplishment to collective efforts, emphasizing an all-hands-on-deck approach to support everyone involved.

School principal Frank Kuzniewski echoed Gauthier’s sentiments in a press statement. He attributed the success in closing achievement gaps to the dedication of teachers and the strategic planning and collaboration among staff. Kuzniewski emphasized the continuous focus on addressing the essential question: ‘What do our students need next?’
