Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, heavily invested in keeping Texas a Republican stronghold during the 2026 midterms but faced a significant defeat. As the largest donor in these elections, Musk contributed at least $446 million. His donations primarily supported his own America PAC and other major Republican super PACs in the Senate and House.
Musk’s most substantial efforts were concentrated in Texas, where he has key business operations. In September, he donated $158 million to the main Senate Republican super PAC, which directed funds to support GOP candidate Ken Paxton, the Texas Attorney General. Alongside this, Musk’s America PAC spent over $47 million against Democratic candidate James Talarico. Overall, Musk’s expenses in Texas approached $224 million according to reports by The New York Times.
Despite Musk’s sizable contributions, the election outcomes were not in his favor. The Associated Press projected that James Talarico would become Texas’ next senator, while Democrat Gina Hinojosa would assume the role of governor. This marked a significant shift, making Texas a Democratic state after decades of Republican dominance—a situation Musk certainly hoped to avoid.
James Talarico, during his victory speech, drew a comparison between his win and the biblical account of David defeating Goliath. He highlighted his victory over Musk, the wealthiest man globally, and against the political establishment, stressing the role of hope and faith in his success.
Musk’s financial backing of Republicans corresponds with his statements about the midterms providing a chance for Republicans to counteract Democrats potentially gaining full control of Washington in 2028. Musk expressed concerns over the possibility of Democrats granting statehood to Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico, along with adopting far-left policies related to immigration.
Musk voiced his worry, stating, “This would result in America becoming a permanent one-party state and the end of democracy in any meaningful sense of the word.”
Previously an Obama supporter, Musk has shifted towards right-wing politics, becoming a major financial force within the GOP. He has surpassed other noted megadonors like the Koch brothers and the Uihleins. Aware of potential scrutiny from Democrats keen to bring him before Congress, Musk remarked, “Live by the sword, die by the sword.”
In the previous 2024 elections, Musk spent upwards of $290 million largely to assist Donald Trump’s bid for the White House, which earned him a powerful government role as the head of DOGE, a significant office following Trump’s victory.
Musk’s initial influence seemed promising, but subsequent political investments, such as spending over $20 million in a Wisconsin Supreme Court race, resulted in losses. Despite threats earlier to create a third-party called the America Party, Musk remains aligned with Republicans.
With the midterms concluded, the 2028 presidential primaries are approaching, promising more opportunities for political investment. Historical evidence suggests substantial donors can keep candidates viable despite apparent setbacks. Musk may consider preparing his financial contributions for upcoming races.
