The discussion around the Justice Department’s files on Jeffrey Epstein has divided some Republican lawmakers, highlighting their differences with former President Donald Trump. In South Carolina, Representative Nancy Mace faces a tough primary race against Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette, who received Trump’s endorsement. Mace claims that her push for transparency regarding the Epstein files influenced Trump’s endorsement decision.

Mace asserts that her commitment to revealing the Epstein files is pivotal, stating to Politico, “That’s the sole reason I didn’t get the endorsement, because I voted to release the Epstein files, and I’m okay with that.” Despite losing Trump’s support, she is dedicated to fighting sex crimes in South Carolina.

Trump praised Evette as a strong leader and fully endorsed her, reshaping the race dynamics. Mace, while acknowledging the impact of Trump’s endorsement, downplays its effects on polling.

The Epstein Files and GOP Discord

The bipartisan push to disclose Epstein-related records created contention within the GOP. Although Trump signed the Epstein Files Transparency Act, criticism arose over the incomplete nature of the disclosures. Republicans who supported the legislation, like Thomas Massie, faced a rare public disagreement with Trump.

Trump often dismissed the transparency issue as a political “hoax,” while some party members insisted on more disclosures. This division, while not culminating in broader rebellion, showcased differing priorities within the party.

As election campaigns continue, the effects of this debate still linger, influencing races like the South Carolina gubernatorial primary.

Key Republican Figures Affected

“I think the biggest crime I committed against the swamp was showing the American people that somebody on the right could join somebody on the left and get something done,” said Thomas Massie regarding the Epstein files effort.

Massie, leading a bipartisan initiative with Representative Ro Khanna, utilized a discharge petition to press for the files’ release. His action was viewed as hostile by the White House, affecting his re-election campaign. Massie, who criticized Trump’s policies, attributes his loss to his transparency efforts.

Nancy Mace

Mace was among the four Republicans supporting Massie’s petition. Despite not facing intense criticism from Trump, she feels her involvement in the Epstein transparency push affected her ability to gain his endorsement.

“If the price of an endorsement was to not vote to release the Epstein files, that is a price I am unwilling to pay,” Mace mentioned on CNN.

Marjorie Taylor Greene

Greene, a former staunch Trump ally, also supported the petition and became critical of Trump’s foreign policy. Her public disputes with Trump and focus on the Epstein files led to her resignation, foreseeing an unfavorable primary battle.

Trump’s reaction to Greene’s departure was derogatory. She indicated that the Epstein issue was central to their falling out.

Lauren Boebert

Boebert, also a petition supporter, faced Trump’s displeasure post-stumping for Massie. Despite threats of losing endorsement, Boebert stands unopposed. She maintains support for Trump while advocating for Epstein case transparency.

Boebert emphasized her commitment to full transparency, stating, “I am going to ensure that President Donald Trump keeps his promises,” in a CBS News interview.
