Recently, Democrat Mayor Zohran Mamdani shared his views on socialism. He believes it ensures a dignified life and that government should provide this to everyone. For those who have experienced socialism, like many in Cuba, the reality presents a stark contrast. They face scarcity, suffering, and human-rights abuses.
The White House Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) released a report highlighting the cost implications of policies proposed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). These policies could cost over $49 trillion in the next decade. This equates to about $355,000 for each American household. A significant portion stems from Medicare for All, estimated at $47.4 trillion.
Other proposed policies include student debt cancellation, free college, a 32-hour workweek, Green New Deal aspects, and rent control. While these figures are substantial, the discussion should go beyond cost. The primary concerns include how to finance these proposals and their impact on taxpayers and the economy.
The debate raises questions about government control in people’s lives. Under Medicare for All, who decides on healthcare provisions? Who sets wages and working hours? How will prices and availability of housing be managed? When resources become government-dependent, the implications for citizens are immense.
“Economic independence — the ability to work, earn, save, build, own, and make decisions for yourself and your family — is an important part of that dignity.”
The DSA movement argues for government programs to solve real issues such as expensive healthcare and high housing costs. While these issues need attention, a compassionate goal does not guarantee effective policy.
The concept of dignity is frequently cited to justify these policies. But relying on government for dignity implies it can be both granted and revoked. Take licensing for example. When obtaining a license becomes challenging, it inhibits small business development.
Dignity, in reality, is an individual right tied to economic independence. Alternatives to these policies offer solutions through smaller, accountable government, simpler taxes, and fewer barriers for businesses, fostering a competitive market with choices for consumers.
Protecting a democratic system is crucial. Americans should freely express differing opinions, organize, vote, and advocate diverse solutions. True freedom exists when citizens make decisions independently and peacefully. Socialism, however, curtails these freedoms.
The price tag of $49 trillion should spark discussions beyond a mere number. It should make Americans reflect on whether expanded government control genuinely enhances or restricts personal freedom.
While issues like compassion, affordability, and economic opportunity are essential, so is freedom. The government cannot create dignity. It belongs to the individual.
